In August, 2003, we celebrated Teree's and my birthdays at the Saxon Pub. James Hand played for Happy Hour, then Jason Allen, and the night ended with Rusty Wier.  We had the front table and since I was the first to arrive, I had the chair right in front of the band.  We'd met Jason just about a month before, and didn't know his band at all.  But, the lead guitar player was standing right in front of me, and he was GOOD!  And he had a dang good voice, too!!

Wayne Douglas Belts Out Another Tune

His name was.....is.....Wayne Douglas.

The next night, Jason and the band played at Club 21, and, we were there!  Wayne and the steel player, Russ, joined our table.  I'm sure they joined us because we were a fun group and not because we had a bottle of yellow wine (tequila) sitting on the table!  ;)

Before the night was over, we'd made two new friends.

Wayne is from Illinois like I am so we had a lot of fun talking about places we both knew.  We'll blame Dobie for getting Wayne 'slightly' intoxicated by taking him shots of 'yellow wine' on stage.  (I'm sure I had nothing to do with that!!!)  I got appointed 'keeper of the billfold' if Wayne ever starts acting foolish over some pretty girl.  Dobie compared notes about Texan musicians with Russ.

We hope everyone else at the club had as much fun as we did!

Wayne has been a special friend of ours ever since.  He currently lives in the Chicago area playing with his band Crossfyre.  If you hear they're anywhere close to you, be sure to go see them!  But, to tell the truth, we hope he comes 'home' to Texas real soon!

01/04/06 UPDATE:  I just heard from Wayne and the Crossfyre band is no more.  Wayne is still playing gigs with friends.....just not as Crossfyre.  Illinois may not know it, but it has lost one of the best bands in the country.  Is there good news?  There sure is.....at least for us Texans!  Wayne is thinking of moving back to our area.  Stayed tuned for more news.  :)
