Daddy was born in April 12, 1905....we
think. At least, that's what we always celebrated. But,
when he went to file for Social Security there seemed to be a problem
proving the year. The courthouse had burned with all the records,
there weren't any hospital records since he'd been born at home, the doctor
had long since passed away, and his sisters couldn't quite agree what year
it was. Thankfully, the
Social
Security Administration accepted 'tradition' and let him have his benefits! The one thing Dad knew about his age was the one thing that always bothered him....he was too young to enlist for WWI and too old for WWII. Dad was very patriotic and it bothered him that he'd never been allowed to fight for his country. He served his country anyway....by driving truck. He'd tell stories about being escorted by authorities because he was hauling 'sensitive' materials......like tires! There were a lot of other trucking stories as well....most not quite so 'patriotic'. :) The picture above is of Dad and his friends. That's Daddy in the front. A tall (6'2") slender guy with a deep booming voice. Later on, he wasn't so slender, but, he was always tall and...even at the end...that voice stilled boomed. Especially when he thought I was ignoring my Mom's calls for me to help in the kitchen! :) |
